Old Vic’s A Christmas Carol to play festive season at the Lowry in Salford

Matthew Warchus’s acclaimed production of A Christmas Carol, adapted by Jack Thorne, will mark its first UK regional run at the Lowry in Salford alongside its tenth season at the Old Vic. The move highlights the ongoing success and cultural reach of the show beyond London.

A Christmas Carol, which has attracted nearly half a million Londonat audiences in its decade-long run at the Old Vic, will extend its 2026-27 season to the Lowry, playing from 11 December 2026 to 10 January 2027. The Old Vic run is scheduled from 12 November 2026 to 9 January 2027, with further details for both venues yet to be confirmed.

The production has also toured internationally in America and Australia and has been streamed into homes, but this is the first time it will be staged in another UK city. The Lowry’s chief executive, Julia Fawcett, described the production as “one of the most exciting, joyous and moving Christmas productions you’ll ever see” and hailed the occasion as “a real landmark moment for theatre in the region.”

Matthew Warchus, artistic director of the Old Vic, expressed pride in the show’s lasting impact, saying: “To now be able to share the joy of this production with the Lowry and its audiences makes this year a truly special one.” Since its London debut, the production has raised £2.2 million for food deprivation charities.

Jack Thorne’s adaptation has become a festive fixture in London theatre, combining classic storytelling with a fresh, contemporary approach. Its transfer to Salford underscores the show’s broader cultural appeal beyond the capital.

The Lowry’s hosting of A Christmas Carol adds to the city’s growing theatrical profile, bringing a high-profile Christmas production with wide public recognition and charitable connections to the region.

Both runs are awaiting further information regarding ticket sales and full creative team details. The Lowry engagement marks a notable expansion in the production’s UK footprint during the Christmas theatre season.
