Simon Stone to Direct The Oresteia at London’s Bridge Theatre in 2026

The Bridge Theatre has announced a new production of Aeschylus’s The Oresteia, directed by Simon Stone, to premiere in July 2026. The staging promises a contemporary reimagining of the ancient Greek tragedy, following the theatre’s recent acclaim for Into the Woods.

The Oresteia will begin previews at the Bridge Theatre on 2 July 2026, with its official opening night set for 14 July. The production is scheduled to run for 11 weeks, closing on 19 September.

Simon Stone, known for his provocative reinterpretations of classic plays, will helm this adaptation based on Aeschylus’s trilogy first performed in Athens in 458 BCE. The story follows the cursed House of Atreus, where Agamemnon’s murder by his wife Clytemnestra, the subsequent revenge killing by their son Orestes, and the establishment of a court of law by the goddess Athena unfold.

Working alongside Stone is Wouter van Ransbeek, with members of the creative team from Stone’s recent Bridge Theatre production of Lady from the Sea returning. This includes set designer Lizzie Clachan, costume designer Mel Page, composer Stefan Gregory, lighting designer Nick Schlieper, and casting director Jessica Ronane.

Stone described The Oresteia as “one of the theatre’s great foundational texts” and emphasised its enduring relevance. He highlighted themes such as “a family haunted by its part in an unjust war,” “the painful burden of inherited trauma,” and “inter-generational conflict,” framing the production as a reflection on ongoing human strife.

The production is described as depicting “a contemporary family [that] wakes up in a Greek myth and can’t seem to find a way out of their hellish destiny,” signalling a modern take on the ancient material.

Tickets for The Oresteia will go on public sale from 1 April. Further details on casting and scheduling are to be confirmed.
