Penguin Random House to publish new Phantom of the Opera young adult novel
To mark 40 years of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s The Phantom of the Opera, Penguin Random House and LW Entertainment have announced a worldwide publishing partnership that will launch a range of new books and audiobooks inspired by the iconic musical.
The publishing initiative begins on 1 September 2026 with Our Strange Duet, a young adult novel by Erin A Craig that reimagines the story from Christine Daaé’s perspective. The novel explores Christine’s ambition, inner life, and the central love triangle with Raoul and the Phantom. A UK edition will follow on 3 September, accompanied by a special hardback edition available exclusively in theatres and online.
Craig described the opportunity as “the honour of a lifetime” and said the project allowed her to explore the mystery of the Phantom through “Broadway’s most beloved gothic heroine”. Penguin Random House Audio will release an audiobook edition featuring a full cast recording with light dramatization and music from the stage score.
Additional books will be published as part of the programme, including a visual anthology titled Andrew Lloyd Webber’s The Phantom of the Opera: A Behind-the-Mask Look at the Global Phenomenon, set for release in October 2026. This volume will feature archival material and interviews with key figures such as Cameron Mackintosh, Sierra Boggess, Michael Crawford, and Rachel Zegler, known for her role in Evita.
A children’s retelling by Christy Webster will also be part of the launch on 1 September 2026 as part of the Little Golden Books series, with two more children’s titles scheduled for 2027.
First staged in 1986, The Phantom of the Opera has been witnessed by more than 160 million people across 58 territories and 23 languages. The story revolves around a masked figure living beneath the Paris Opéra who becomes obsessed with Christine Daaé, nurturing her talents while exerting control over the theatre and its community.
The new publishing programme is timed to celebrate four decades of the musical’s enduring influence and offers fans fresh ways to engage with the story through multiple formats.
