Ryan Calais Cameron launches season to champion new British playwrights in Catford
Olivier Award nominee Ryan Calais Cameron has announced a new development and production programme at Broadway Theatre, Catford, aimed at nurturing early-career Black and Global Majority playwrights from Lewisham. The season will showcase three new plays with extensive dramaturgical support and mentoring.
Ryan Calais Cameron has designed the initiative to support three emerging playwrights—Justice Ezi, Demi Wilson-Smith, and Kaleb D’Aguilar—offering them financial backing, development space, and mentorship as their work progresses from script to stage. The productions will be presented in Broadway Theatre’s studio space across summer and autumn.
The trio of plays includes Ezi’s Last Goal Wins, a football drama spotlighting two players vying for a Nigerian national team spot, running from 1 to 12 July. Wilson-Smith’s Cranes follows from 23 September to 4 October, a true story exploring the impact of a protest on the writer-performer’s life. Closing the season is D’Aguilar’s How To Keep Warm in Winter, a Caribbean love story set in 1970s London, playing from 14 to 25 October.
Collectively, the productions will involve over 23 creatives, providing a platform for diverse voices from the borough of Lewisham. Cameron, who grew up in Lewisham, described Broadway Theatre as the place that first sparked his creative imagination and called the season both a dream realised and a vital structural intervention.
He highlighted the “massive crisis” in new writing and the risk of losing crucial Global Majority working-class voices without direct support. Cameron praised the playwrights for capturing universal truths and cultural resilience, emphasising his commitment to providing the resources and mentorship they need.
The season affirms an ongoing focus on amplifying underrepresented voices in British theatre and creating pathways for new voices to emerge with institutional support. The production dates and creative team details beyond those mentioned remain to be confirmed.
