Cast announced for London premiere of Hamlet Hail to the Thief at Barbican

The London premiere of Hamlet Hail to the Thief at the Barbican Theatre has unveiled its cast, featuring key players reprising roles from the original production. The show’s fusion of Shakespeare’s Hamlet with Radiohead’s album Hail to the Thief marks a distinctive theatrical event.

Casting for Hamlet Hail to the Thief at the Barbican Theatre has been confirmed, with Samuel Blenkin returning as Hamlet. He originally appeared in the Royal Shakespeare Company and Factory International runs of the production.

Ami Tredrea will play Ophelia, while Paul Hilton reprises his dual roles as Claudius and the Ghost. Claudia Harrison returns as Gertrude, joined by Alby Baldwin as Horatio, Brandon Grace as Laertes, Felipe Pacheco as Guildenstern, Romaya Weaver as Barnarda and the Player Queen, and Marienella Phillips as an offstage swing.

The production is a co-creation of Thom Yorke, Christine Jones, and Steven Hoggett, combining Shakespeare’s text with music drawn from Radiohead’s album Hail to the Thief. Yorke has reworked the album material specifically for live performance.

The creative team includes Yorke as orchestrator, AMP featuring Sadra Tehrani as scenographer, and Justin Levine as arranger. Tom Brady serves as music supervisor, Jess Williams choreographs, and Gareth Fry is sound designer, supported by Will Duke’s projection design, Jessica Hung Han Yun’s lighting design, and Lisa Duncan’s costumes.

Casting responsibilities were handled by Charlotte Sutton for the RSC, with dramaturgy and textual consultancy provided by Ayanna Thompson. Jack Moulton contributes as sound manipulator.

Hamlet Hail to the Thief premiered in Manchester and then transferred to Stratford-upon-Avon. Its London debut at the Barbican is now scheduled, with further casting announcements to follow.

Details on the Barbican run dates have been revealed but are to be confirmed. The production’s blend of classic text and contemporary music reflects ongoing theatrical experimentation with crossover artistic forms.
