Almeida reveals full cast for Under the Shadow adaptation by Carmen Nasr

The Almeida Theatre has announced the complete cast for Under the Shadow, an adaptation of Babak Anvari’s film, set to open in June 2026. This production explores life in 1980s Tehran during the Iran-Iraq war, combining historical drama with supernatural elements.

Under the Shadow will run at the Almeida Theatre from Tuesday 2 June to Saturday 4 July 2026, with a press night scheduled for Tuesday 9 June. The adaptation is by Carmen Nasr and directed by Nadia Latif, marking a new theatrical interpretation of the acclaimed film.

Leila Farzad, previously announced, leads the cast alongside Nadia Albina, Bijan Daneshmand, Souad Faress, Mona Goodwin, Nicholas Karimi, and Rachid Sabitri. Child roles are performed by Jago Agrawal, Esma Akar, Rohan Berry, Atlanta Chaniac Golding, Adi Gimziunas, and Erin Jemmotte.

Set during the 1980s Iran-Iraq war, the narrative focuses on Shideh, whose husband is conscripted, leaving her alone to care for their daughter under the threat of bombing in Tehran. The plot weaves in mysterious and unexplained events that escalate as the story unfolds.

The production’s creative team includes Ben Stones as set designer, Khadija Raza handling costume design, with James Farncombe on lighting. Sound design is by Donato Wharton, and casting by Anna Cooper, supported by children’s casting director Amy Beadle.

Under the Shadow revisits a pivotal moment in Iranian history, blending political tension and personal struggle, while highlighting the female perspective during wartime. The choice of source material reflects the Almeida’s continued interest in bold, politically charged storytelling.

This staging adds to a growing trend of contemporary theatre adapting films to explore complex social and historical issues through a live medium. The full run and press night details provide a clear schedule for critics and audiences alike.
