Back to the Future The Musical announces lead cast for UK tour
The first-ever UK tour of Back to the Future The Musical will open later this year with Axel Duffy as Marty McFly and Roger Bart reprising his role as Doc Brown. The production follows a successful West End run and features new music alongside classic hits from the iconic 1985 film.
Back to the Future The Musical, based on the 1985 Universal Pictures/Amblin Entertainment film, will begin its UK tour in Bristol this October before visiting theatres across the country. The musical tells the story of Marty McFly and Doc Brown’s time-travelling adventures, centred on the DeLorean car.
Roger Bart, who originated the role of Doc Brown on stage in the West End, Broadway, and internationally, will return for the tour. Axel Duffy has been cast as Marty McFly, with further casting announcements to follow.
The show features new music and lyrics by Emmy and Grammy Award-winner Alan Silvestri, along with six-time Grammy winner Glen Ballard. It also incorporates classic tracks from the film such as “The Power of Love” and “Johnny B Goode.”
The musical’s previous West End run was staged at the Adelphi Theatre and has received multiple awards including the WhatsOnStage and Olivier Awards for Best New Musical. The production has been seen by over four million people worldwide.
Internationally, Back to the Future The Musical has been presented in Australia, North America, Japan, and even on Royal Caribbean Cruises. It has become a global phenomenon since the original film’s 40th anniversary in 2025.
The original film grossed $360.6 million worldwide, with the trilogy earning $936.6 million total, equivalent to over $1.8 billion in today’s money. Its story remains a celebrated cultural touchstone.
The tour’s creative team includes Tony Award-winner John Rando directing, with Tim Hatley on set and costume design, Chris Bailey choreographing, and technical contributions from experts in illusions, lighting, sound, and video design. The full cast and production details are to be confirmed.
