Taylor Mac’s Holiday Sauce to receive UK premiere at Soho Theatre Walthamstow

Taylor Mac’s festive show Holiday Sauce will have its UK premiere at Soho Theatre Walthamstow this Christmas, marking the first live in-person UK run for the production. The holiday-themed work offers an alternative to traditional Christmas entertainment through music, film, and burlesque.

Holiday Sauce, created by Mac and co-presented with Pomegranate Arts, will play at Soho Theatre Walthamstow from 17 to 23 December 2026. The show reframes classic festive songs with a political lens and captures the holiday season “in all its dysfunctional glory.” It features costumes by longtime collaborator Machine Dazzle and a live band led by music director Matt Ray.

Taylor Mac is a MacArthur Fellow, a Pulitzer Prize finalist, and a Tony Award nominee known for ambitious works such as A 24-Decade History of Popular Music, Hir, Bark of Millions, Gary: A Sequel to Titus Andronicus, and The Lily’s Revenge. Their productions often blend theatre, music, and visual spectacle with sharp social commentary.

Steve Lock, Soho Theatre’s head of comedy, reflected on Mac’s long relationship with the venue, recalling Mac’s London debut there in 2007 after first encountering Mac at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 2006. He described bringing Holiday Sauce to Soho Theatre Walthamstow as “a brilliant and very Soho way to celebrate the end of the year.”

In addition to Holiday Sauce, Mac will perform an abridged version of A 24-Decade History of Popular Music with the Philharmonia Orchestra at London’s Royal Festival Hall on 26 November 2026. This follow-up event highlights Mac’s continuing presence and influence within London’s cultural landscape.

Holiday Sauce’s UK premiere indicates a growing appetite for theatre productions that challenge traditional festive narratives through inventive, genre-blurring approaches. The show’s arrival at Soho Theatre Walthamstow represents a significant moment in Mac’s longstanding UK connection and the theatre’s commitment to showcasing cutting-edge international artists.
