David Morrissey and Mary-Louise Parker star in Bridge Theatre’s The Oresteia

The Bridge Theatre has unveiled its casting for Simon Stone’s production of The Oresteia, set to open in July 2026. The revival of Aeschylus’s ancient Greek tragedy has attracted a prominent ensemble, signalling a significant theatrical event next summer.

The Bridge Theatre will present The Oresteia, directed by Simon Stone and co-created with Wouter van Ransbeek, beginning previews on 2 July 2026 and officially opening on 14 July. The production will run for 11 weeks until 19 September.

Leading the cast is David Morrissey as Christopher, alongside Tom Glynn-Carney as Augie, Mary-Louise Parker as Montie, Rosie Sheehy as Alice, Lloyd Hutchinson as Melville, John Macmillan as Jerome, and Archie Madekwe as Lorenzo.

The Oresteia, written by Aeschylus and first performed in Athens in 458 BCE, centres on the cursed House of Atreus. Key events include Agamemnon’s murder by his wife Clytemnestra, Orestes’ revenge killing of his mother, and the establishment of a court of law by Athena to resolve the cycle of vengeance.

Rosie Sheehy expressed enthusiasm for the project, noting the rarity of The Oresteia on stage and its continued relevance: “The themes and emotions at the heart of these stories are still so relevant and the need for humanity to watch humanity on stage still so important.”

Mary-Louise Parker highlighted her admiration for Simon Stone’s work, recalling his production of Yerma in New York as “one of the greatest things I’ve ever seen in my life.”

Stone is known for his radical reinterpretations of classic texts, including Yerma at the Young Vic, Phaedra at the National Theatre, and last year’s WhatsOnStage Award-nominated The Lady from the Sea at the Bridge.

Several members of the creative team from The Lady from the Sea will return for The Oresteia, including set designer Lizzie Clachan, costume designer Mel Page, composer Stefan Gregory, lighting designer Nick Schlieper, and casting director Jessica Ronane.

Tickets for The Oresteia are on sale now, marking a major cultural moment for classical theatre enthusiasts next summer.
