Space Dogs musical tells Laika’s Cold War story at The Other Palace

The new rock musical Space Dogs, recounting the true tale of Laika’s historic orbit, will open in London this summer. The production explores a unique Cold War story through a docu-comedy format, performed by its two creators.

Space Dogs: The Musical is set for a limited run at The Other Palace Studio from 28 July to 9 August. The show focuses on Laika, a stray dog from Moscow who was sent into space by a secretive Soviet scientist during the Cold War Space Race.

The rock musical is described as a docu-comedy and is both written and performed by Nick Blaemire and Van Hughes, who play all the roles onscreen. Direction is by Will Blum.

The show’s producers, Paul Taylor-Mills and Tricia Small, praised the London presentation as “the perfect next chapter for this wildly original show.” They noted the creators’ skill in crafting a theatrical world that balances humour with emotional depth.

Laika’s story has captivated imaginations as a symbol of both scientific ingenuity and Cold War tensions. Space Dogs approaches this historic event with a fresh theatrical form, blending factual accounts with comic elements.

The production’s arrival at The Other Palace continues the venue’s commitment to innovative new musical theatre. Details on ticket availability and further creative contributors remain to be confirmed.

Space Dogs adds to a growing trend of theatre exploring unconventional historical narratives through inventive, hybrid styles.
